Introduction

History The library of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine was established in 1954. It has been known as the library of Jiangsu Traditional Chinese Medicine Training School, the branch library of Jiangsu New Medical College, the library of Nanjing Traditional Chinese Medicine College, and now the Jianwen Library of the University. It is a professional library the mainly collects medical literature, especially TCM literature, as well as social science and other natural science literature. With an area of 29,800 square meters, it is the first and only institution of TCM listed in National Key Protection Unit of Ancient Books by the State Council and the Ministry of culture, and Jiangsu Key Protection Unit of Ancient Books by government of Jiangsu Province . It is also the Nanjing Branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine Document Information Retrieval Center affiliated to State Administration of Traditional Medicine, National Scientific and Technological Facility Platform, key participant of Medicine and Health Data Sharing Research Project, Jiangsu Higher Education Documents Supporting System, and a member of China Higher Education Documents Supporting System.

Resources The library now covers an amount of 790,000 Chinese and foreign printed books and journals, among which there are nearly 40,000 ancient books of nearly 3000 types, 950,000 e-books as well as 35 databases of Chinese and foreign journals, patents and dissertations. The ancient books are mainly block-printed edition of early Ming dynasty, the only existing copy and rare block-printed edition of Ming dynasty, manuscripts that did not published, as well as the early block-printed editions of Japan and Korea. In recent years, the library has steadily increased its collection and quality by bringing in authorized databases, organizing Internet free access, developing our own resources, exchanging and sharing interlibrary resources, and exploiting featured library resources, etc. A complete Literature resources system with distinctive characteristics and reasonable structure has basically formed.

Human Resources There are 48 staff in the library, among whom 5 with doctoral degrees and 24 with master’s degrees, covering 60 percent of personnel. Their majors vary from traditional Chinese medicine, medical information, library and information science to computer science. In recent years, professionals in the library has made remarkable achievements in the protection and utilization of ancient books, digitization of featured resources, development of own resources and TCM information service.

Departments Focusing resource, technology and service, the library now set functional departments such as Administration Office, Acquisition and Cataloguing Department, Circulation Department, Information Retrieval Center, Teaching and Research Section of Documental Retrieval, Ancient Books Department, Technology Department and Service Department.

Services The reader-oriented and resource-based library provides services covering collection, lending, reading and search. There are 3000 seats for reading and 200 for e-reading. The library has adopted the management automation since 1998. In 2008, it realized a seamless link with university digital libraries all over the province, based on Huiwen library’s automated management system. The library opens 91 hours per week, and its digital platform provides 24 hour Internet service.
